Discovery HD's "Planet Earth" Review Summary

Discovery HD's Planet Earth is "the best thing on TV right now. Period." Originally a BBC series, Discovery and Discovery HD have been airing Planet Earth while it has gone on to win four Primetime Emmys. This 11 part documentary took "five years and more than 2,000 days of shooting create," using technology and camera settings never used before. Viewers report that it's a great series and worth your trouble of viewing no matter what TV it's viewed on, but if you can catch it on Discovery HD on an HD television, it's "what you bought an HDTV for." Even marine biologists are singing Planet Earth's praises, saying, "when I first tuned into Planet Earth, I was so in awe, I couldn't wait to watch it again." Reviewers couldn't get over that this beautiful world is around us all all the time, yet we ignore it. "The world is an amazing place."

There's no two ways about it: Discovery HD's broadcast of the BBC series "planet earth" is the best thing on TV. Its also probably the best HD footage I've ever seen.

The series is an 11 part series that took 5 years and more than 2,000 days of shooting to create. Using technology never used before in these settings (a 10,000 frame-per-second camera to capture a Great White breaching to catch a seal and an HD video camera with a lens to bring a wolf two-miles away into you living room crystal clear) the BBC has created a series that will give you a whole new appreciation for the the creatures...

My mom told me about this 11 part series back when it originally aired on HD TV.  She has an HD TV so it must have looked fantastic.  When I saw it was going to be on Discovery channel again throughout December, I knew I had to catch it.  The only trouble is that this time it isn't broadcast on an HD channel but instead just the regular Discovery channel.  It still looks really cool on my mom's TV, and still is worth watching on ANY TV you may have.

What is it?
Each of the 11 hour long episodes focus on one aspect of Planet Earth.  Today I watched Fresh Water and Desserts.  These will be replaying...

I am a marine biologist so I love everything about marine life and the oceans.  When I first tuned into Planet Earth, I was so in awe, I couldn't wait to watch it again.  Each episode features never before seen footage of animals in action in amazing settings.  I loved the nature scenes of the polar seas of the belugas and polar bears.  The whales migrating just touched my heart, not to mention all the desert and rainforest environments.  This series is 11 parts and you will want so much more.  Each episode is narrated so you will not only love seeing the animal footage, but you will learn... read full review »

This is what you bought an HDTV for.  I like nature shows to begin with, but this thing blew me away.  Some of the things they showed just made me scratch my head and say, "How in the world did they film that?"  It's an absolute must see for anyone, but especially if you're a fan of nature shows.

Planet earth on blu-ray is what blu-ray was made for. This series of dvd's has made my owning a plasma tv all worth it. I can watch this series over and over again. I love the narrotor for the english bbc version, but sigourney weavers narroation for the discovery channel version is not nearly as good. This is the best dvd you can ever buy. I have not seen such clarity outside of the real thing and the scenes that they show you is amazing. I love the look and feel of this series and it will keep the little ones enthralled as well. Do not hesitate at buying this set, and since it is coming down...

I would like to start off by saying that everyone I know has seen the Planet Earth series, and everyone is as amazed as I am!  Planet Earth gives us a never-before-seen look at all aspects of our planet, and does so in a way that is truly captivating to all ages.  I was not only amazed by the camera-angles and exclusive footage throughout the 11 hours of this series, but the fact that it was done in High Definition (HD) makes it even more special.  Though planet earth is a year or so old by now, it is still probably the best HD programming I have ever seen.  I can't imagine that any program...

Planet Earth was everything I had expected. I only wish there were more episodes. Most of the footage was shot so well and was of many things we have already seen on television. Just not in that fashion. It is visually addicting and very satisfying. The show is easily described as educational art work. I would definatly recommend this show to others. I just hope the show gets picked up for another season or atleast a few more episodes. The fan base is already there from what I understand. After the premier episode my friends and I were all talking about it. Me and my girlfriend are both very picky... read full review »

Discovery's HD "Planet Earth" is absolutely stunning!! I have been a fan of nature shows and documentaries all my life. This is far and away the best yet. I have learned so much and enjoyed all the "never before seen" footage. They truly did capture images I have never seen before. The only drawback for me is that I don't own an HD TV. Even so, the visuals were still great!!

With all the new "reality" shows on TV these days, this is the only one I would not be embarrassed to admit that I watch and enjoy. REALITY at it's FINEST

Highly recommended viewing

i own the version narrated by sir robert attenborough(sp?)  it isn't as wonderful as the version that is narrated by sigourney weaver...i really enjoyed her soft soothing voice telling the story much better.  the camera work is truly incredible.  i was left in complete awe of how beautiful and strange our world is.  i was moved to tears many times as well.  to think this life is all around us everyday and we take it for granted!  definitely something everyone will love from 0-99  years!!!

My boyfriend and I are obsessed with the Blue-Ray version.  We got a new BIG screen HD-TV and Planet Earth is just incredible to watch.  The extended clips on the making of it are so interesting to seee these producers who go and live in the elements for months at a time have a hard-core job.  The sweeping shots, especially the pull away, birds eye views make your jaw-drop.  Also, the time-lapse feature is really neat to watch.  Check it out today!

I sat down and started watching the episodes with my 11 yr old son and 9 year old daughter. I thought they would get bored, but instead, it made them want to "go green". They started recycling to avoid the adding any garbage to the oceans. They were so captivated with how there is so much to see. They love it. I think I love it more cuz they are learning something while watching, instead of them playing video games.

This was the perfect gift for someone who loves watching the Discovery Channel and learning about the earth and animals.   Everyone I know that has seen it has truly enjoyed it and been fascinated by it.  It was on Oprah's favorite things 2007 so you know it's good.  It's narrarated by Sigourney Weaver and the visuals are truly amazing.  A total viewing experience!

We have been absolutely amazed by Planet Earth.  We were hoping to be able to show the kids, but some of the animal eating animals scenes are a bit much for them.  It is narrated by a British Guy, which is usually fine, but sometimes we can't catch what he says.  We have a little TV and are impressed by everything, if you have a big TV I think you would be blown away!

the Planet Earth series is full of information and will never cease to amaze me.  Honestly, I never knew so many animals existed before this show. Very informational, and fun to watch as a family.  Although the british accent is a little tough to understand, it is very easy to quickly catch on.  The vivid images and close up scenary is awesome too!!
